Denis F. Cioffi, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Decision Sciences Department in the School of Business, has been at GW since 1998. Cioffi earned his doctorate in astrophysics from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. After research at the University of California at Berkeley, the Goddard Space Flight Center, and North Carolina State University in Raleigh, his science background led directly to his project and program management experience at various federal agencies. The transition to management comprised positions at the National Science Foundation, NASA Headquarters, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President, where he was a Senior Policy Analyst.

After a short time at the National Research Council, he came to GW from the Center for Science, Trade, and Technology Policy at George Mason University. Dr. Cioffi served as Director of GW’s Project Management Program for three years and chaired the Project Management Academic Committee a couple of times (including the Spring 2012 semester). An acknowledged expert on distance education, he was one of three faculty composing the Business School’s Spring 2011 Distance Education Task Force.

He has worked on the University’s Innovation Task Force (leading the study of transitions to the cloud) and on the committee to choose GW’s Chief Information Officer, and he has chaired the University’s Research and Instructional Technology Committee. He was one of the “three amigos” on the University Teaching Consortium Task Force that met from Fall 2009 through Spring 2010, which resulted in the report that led to the decision to establish the Office of Teaching and Learning. He took responsibility as Associate Provost and Director of the Teaching and Learning Collaborative on 19 March 2012. Dr. Cioffi worked half time at the TLC this semester until his two sections of Planning and Scheduling were completed. Since the first of June, Dr. Cioffi has been working at the TLC full-time as its Director.
