Awards

There are a variety of university-wide awards to honor faculty members and graduate teaching assistants for excellence in teaching. The Teaching & Learning Collaborative is now managing the process for nominations and selection of these awards.

Winners of the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence and the Bender Teaching Award will be considered for admission into the GW Academy of Distinguished Teachers. 

Call for nominations begins Otober 4th. All nominations must be submitted via the TLC website by November 29th, and supporting materials sent to the TLC (for the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence, Bender Award and Amsterdam Award) by January 17th.

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence

  • Faculty members must be nominated by an undergraduate for this award.
  • GW award for a tenured member of the faculty of CCAS, SBPM, SEAS, ESIA, or the Milken Institute School who regularly teaches undergraduate students.
  • The professor must be nominated by an undergraduate student and supported by his or her department.
  • The 2013-2014 winner of this prize is Anupama Phene, Associate Professor and Grub Distinguished Scholar of International Business

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Service Prize

  • The award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty to recognize exceptional service to GW. 
  • Emphasis will be put on service that is voluntary, above and beyond the usual or require faculty service, and on service that is university-wide
  • The 2013-2014 Trachtenberg Prize for Service was awarded to Kathryn Newcomer, Director, The Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Administration.

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Faculty Scholarship (Research)

  • The award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty that has made significant original contributions to research and/or creative endeavors.
  • The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding research accomplishments while they are being made rather than years afterward.
  • The 2013-2014 Trachtenberg Prize for Faculty Scholarship was awarded to James E. Foster, Professor of Economics and International Affairs; Director, Institute for International Economic Policy.

Bender Teaching Award

  • GW awards given to either full-time or part-time faculty members. Faculty members may be nominated by a department chair, colleague, or student, or faculty members can nominate themselves.
  • The 2013-2014 Bender Teaching Awards were awarded to:
    • Jacqueline Barnett, Assistant Professor, Department of Physician Assisstant Studies
    • Ellen F. Goldman, Associate Professor of Human & Organizational Learning, and Clinical Research & Leadership and Director, Master Teacher Leadership Development Programs
    • Natalia Romanova, Professorial Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes

Philip J. Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Award

  • This teaching award is given to GW Graduate Teaching Assistants who have had at least three semesters of GTA experience. The committee considers evaluations from students and supervising professors, as well as the quality of the GTA’s academic work.
  • The 2013-2014 Philip J. Amsterdam Awards were awarded to:
    • Sarah Alcala, Department of Immunology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences
    • Andrew Du, Department of Anthropology
    • Shannon Manucs, Department of American Studies
    • Yiseon Yoo, Department of Economics
