*Please note that the nomination period for the Trachtenberg, Bender, and Amsterdam Awards has been extended to December 1*

There are a variety of university-wide awards to honor faculty members and graduate teaching assistants for excellence in teaching, service, and research. Faculty Affairs and the Office of the Vice President for Research are managing the processes for nominations and selections of these awards.

New this year: A task force was designated to review and revise the criteria and submission packages for the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence and Bender Teaching Award. Also, the Office of the Vice President for Research is introducing four new research awards. More information about these awards can be found on thier website.

NOMINATE NOW

Call for nominations begins Otober 6th. All nominations must be submitted via the UTLC website by December 1st (deadline extended), and supporting materials sent to the UTLC (for the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence, Bender Award and Amsterdam Award) by January 22nd.

Winners of the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence and the Bender Teaching Award will be inducted into the GW Academy of Distinguished Teachers. 

Awards

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence

  • Faculty members must be nominated by an undergraduate student for this award.
  • GW award for a tenured member of the faculty who regularly teaches undergraduate students.
  • The faculty member's nomination must be supported by his or her department.
  • The 2014-2015 winner of this prize is Alexander Dent, Associate Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs.

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Service Prize

  • The award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty to recognize exceptional service to GW. 
  • Emphasis will be put on service that is voluntary, above and beyond the usual or require faculty service, and on service that is university-wide
  • The 2014-2015 Trachtenberg Prize for Service was awarded to Joseph Cordes, Assoc Dir, Trachtenberg School of Public Policy & Public Administration; Professor of Economics, Public Policy and Public Admin, & International Affairs.

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Faculty Scholarship (Research)

  • The award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty that has made significant original contributions to research and/or creative endeavors.
  • The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding research accomplishments while they are being made rather than years afterward.
  • The 2014-2015 Trachtenberg Prize for Faculty Scholarship was awarded to Nathan Brown, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs.

Bender Teaching Award

  • GW awards given to either full-time or part-time faculty members. Faculty members may be nominated by a department chair, colleague, or student, or faculty members can nominate themselves.
  • The 2014-2015 Bender Teaching Awards were awarded to:
    • Irene Foster, Assistant Professor of Economics
    • Adrienne Hancock, Assistant Professor of Speech and Hearing Science
    • Edward Helfers, Part-Time Faculty, University Writing Program
    • Juliet Lee, Assistant Professor of Surgery

Philip J. Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Award

  • This teaching award is given to GW Graduate Assistants who have had at least three semesters of GA experience. The committee considers evaluations from students and supervising professors, as well as the quality of the GA’s academic work.
  • The 2014-2015 Philip J. Amsterdam Awards were awarded to:
    • Meraj Allahrakha, Department of Economics
    • Craig Allen, Department of American Studies
    • Liegha McReynolds, Department of English
